| Previously in Sean's Angel: Know Thy Enemy |
"That doesn't sound too good." Marty was quick to notice Sean's fast change in attitude.
"Well, they do supposedly have my best interest at heart." Sean turned his head, and watched the passing traffic.
"Your best interests? That sounds ominous." Marty couldn't contain his giggles any longer.
"You'll see. Boy will you see." Sean noticed the slight grin on his face.
"If you say so. But they seem harmless enough." Marty regained his composure, and lost the humor.
"Harmless? You do have a lot to learn." Sean smiled as he watched Marty get nervous again.
"Well then, I'll have to keep my eyes open, and stay alert at all times." Marty fidgeted in his seat, he knew Sean only spoke the truth.
"Looks like we're almost there. Are you ready for a meeting" Sean wore an evil grin on face as he looked at Marty.
Cecilia sat the at the kitchen table. Her composure was less than her normal upbeat cheery self. Her hands were clasped around the mug of coffee in her hands.
Just minutes earlier, she'd received the phone call from Gordon about the incident at the school. She couldn't figure it out.
'How did that happen? I mean that sort of thing just doesn't happen in this day and age. I wonder how they did it, substitute principals like that?' She mused to herself, her hands turning the ceramic vessel between her fingers.
Her mind wandered even further down the path of despair.
'What is going to happen now? What will the kids do? And what will Sean do about my suggestion for enrollment there? Will he ever forgive me?' She broke her thought process when her brain registered wetness on her fingers. In her turmoil, she had spilled some coffee on herself.
She stood to get a towel to clean the mess she'd made. While she looked around the kitchen to make sure nothing else had missed her cleaning, the clock caught her attention.
'What? I've been sitting here for that long?' She tried to shake the doom that hovered over her. She knew the boys would be home soon, and that they could read her emotional state.
She crossed the kitchen to grab something to wipe up the spill. As her hands touched the soft cotton fabric, a chill ran up her spine.
'Don't worry Granma.' The little girl's voice almost made her jump.
"You should try to warn people before you do that." Cecilia turned to face the figure of Sean's daughter.
'It's going to be okay. Dad won't get mad at you, he already took care of things.' Amanda approached her, watching for any other emotions to flare out.
"Come here. All of you kids mean so much to me, even if you scare me sometimes." Cecilia wrapped her arms around her.
'What? None for me?' Jacob appeared next to them.
"Of course there's some for you." Cecilia let her grip loosen to let him in.
'You don't need to worry Granma. Dad won't get mad at you.' Amanda sounded so sure of herself.
"Do I really want to know?" Cecilia dropped her arms to her side.
'No, you don't.' Jacob's head dropped as he began to stare at his shoes.
"Now you have me worried. What exactly happened?" Cecilia stared at the children, her hands resting on her hips.
'Well…. Ummm….' Amanda looked to her brother for the answers.
'It's kinda like… well you know…' Jacob was stalling for time, looking from Amanda back to Cecilia.
"Just spit it out now. You two have me worried." Cecilia looked at them with pleading eyes.
'It just kinda happened…' Amanda was still unsure of how to answer.
'He was really feeling drained…' Jacob talked with his hands more than his voice.
"Okay, let's start from the beginning." Cecilia felt that this news would be less than expected, and sat back down at the table.
'You know how Dad is…' Amanda tried to act innocent.
'How he is so protective, not only of us, and the kids too.' Jacob crept towards the table.
"Yes, and I know he probably went berserk after the alarms went off." Cecilia stared at the table as she shook her head.
'I don't think you could describe it as "going berserk", exactly.' Amanda placed her hands on the table, hoping it would help.
"And what's your interpretation of this, Jacob?" Cecilia looked towards him, hoping some truth might come out.
'He was in a big meeting, when he heard it go off…' Jacob wanted to stall as long as he could.
"Yes, and then what?" Cecilia's patience was wearing thin, and they could tell it in her voice.
'He took control, and made them think that they were to be afraid of him.' Amanda didn't want her brother to take all the heat.
'He raced to the school as fast as the limo could go. And then when they went into the office…' Jacob felt Cecilia's stare bore a hole in him.
'He made sure the bad man couldn't hurt anyone else.' Amanda wanted this interrogation to end.
"And what do you mean, "couldn't hurt anyone else"? What does that mean?" Cecilia clasped her hands, and stared at her intertwining fingers.
'He brought the bad man somewhere, and when they returned, the bad man, wasn't the same anymore.' Jacob hurried to get it out.
"You mean, that they disappeared?" Cecilia's eyed widened.
'No. They went spiritually. Dad took his spirit somewhere, and their bodies stayed put.' Amanda said not batting an eyelash.
'Like when you dream, your soul goes somewhere, but your body stays.' Jacob explained as the look on her face went blank.
"Oh. I see now." Cecilia looked like her mind was put through a blender.
'I know you don't. But it worked out for the better.' Amanda smiled at her as she reached for her hand.
"I guess you're right. Is that all?" Cecilia sat back in her chair, bracing herself for any more news.
The kids looked at each other, but it was Amanda who frowned and shook her head.
'Well, there is one more thing…' Jacob didn't make eye contact.
The news must've been bad, if the shrug from Amanda was any indication.
Cecilia sat there, waiting for the explanation.
'Dad needed some energy, after what he did, he was drained. So we kinda… gave him some of ours.' Jacob stared at his feet, waiting for the backlash from this latest admission.
"Is that all?" Cecilia looked from one to the other, trying to notice any indication of more news.
'Nope, that's it.' Amanda was finally able to smile, somewhat.
"Well then, there's nothing to worry about is there?" Cecilia stood, arms opened waiting for them.
'We're so sorry Granma.' Amanda was first to enjoy the embrace.
'I hope you're not mad at us.' Jacob whispered into her side, afraid that he was in trouble.
"You guys have nothing to worry about. The only thing I heard was that you helped your dad when he needed it. As far as the other, I might have to ask what he did though." Cecilia held them with all the love she could muster.
'Don't you like it?' Amanda looked up to her.
"Like what, sweetheart?" Cecilia looked at her.
'That you can really feel us.' Jacob nestled into her side more.
"I guess I never realized it till now. But yes, I like it very much." Cecilia gave them a big squeeze.
'But, in order to do that, we use a lot of energy. So this can't last.' Jacob released his grip and looked at her.
"I don't care. Any time I can hold you two for real, is a precious moment." Cecilia realized that her hold on them was loosening.
'Don't worry Granma, we'll be back, and soon.' Amanda's features were becoming more transparent with every syllable.
'We love you!' Were the last words she heard from them.
It didn't take her long to realize how much time had passed with her unexpected visit. She began to worry about how the boys would handle this situation with their school. She was startled when the front door opened.
"Granma! We're home!" The sound of Brandon's smaller feet could be heard coming through the living room.
"Aren't you the speedy one today?" Cecilia braced herself for the inevitable hug.
"There was some excitement today at school." Brandon nested himself into her side.
"I heard. But how is it that you made it inside before your brothers?" Cecilia kissed the top of his head.
"His little legs move faster than ours." Justin poked his head around the corner.
"Yeah, since he started using his legs again, he just won't sit still." Jared followed him into the kitchen.
"I see. But what's this about school?" Cecilia looked from one face to the next, wanting to hear their explanation of what happened.
"Can we have a snack first?" Justin looked towards the fridge.
"Alright, you can have a snack. But as soon as we sit down, it's time to answer some questions." Cecilia knew what hunger does to a young mind, so she relented.
Justin was the first to get to the fridge, with Brandon right behind him. Jared knew better than to get in the way of those two and their appetites.
"Jared, is something wrong sweetie?" Cecilia watched him, as he wasn't anywhere near his normal self.
"Not really." His response was about as quick as his actions.
Jared walked towards the counter, stared at a cupboard, and then began to sniffle.
Justin looked over at his twin, and frowned. He knew that Jared would have a hard time with this.
Brandon was more concerned with his stomach. He kept bringing things out of the fridge, and placing them on the counter in hopes of making something edible with all of it.
"Alright, before you guys make a bigger mess than you want to clean up, let me help." Cecelia looked from Jared to the counter filling up with more stuff than any one person could ever want.
"Then, you and I are going to have a talk. And no butts about it." She added walking past Jared, rubbing his shoulder.
"What's for lunch, then? Can we help?" Brandon bounced around the kitchen, taking a mental inventory of what was quick to make.
"What would you like?" Cecilia crossed her arms and glared at them.
"Something quick and easy. I'm starving." Justin rubbed his stomach, and tried to look like he was famished.
"Oh please. You just ate a couple of hours ago. You can't be hungry already!?" Jared shook his head.
"I'm a growing boy. Not to mention, we need the energy to keep up with the bottomless pit over there." Justin pointed towards Brandon who was still examining the contents of the pantry.
"Hey! I resemble that remark!" Brandon never turned around, his eyes wandering around all the boxes.
"How about a nice sandwich, with some soup?" Cecilia could tell this was one of those times to let them be boys.
"Sounds good. You think that'll be enough for you?" Justin directed his comments towards the bent over figure, butt in the air hanging out the pantry door.
"It's a good enough start. Granma, you really need to get some more snack foods in there. It's like, everything in there needs to be cooked, or something." Brandon was facing her, but pointed over his shoulder.
"I think that having junk snacks wouldn't be as good as a solid meal or fruit. Something a growing body needs. Junk food is quick calories, but that doesn't last. A piece of fruit lasts longer than a bag of chips, as far as energy goes." Cecelia rolled her eyes.
"But, a bag of chips… tastes so good! And they don't spoil like fruit does." Brandon shrugged his shoulders as he looked at his brothers.
Justin winked at his little brother. At least he did try.
"Jared, would you like to help me?" Cecelia wasn't really asking, but suggesting with authority.
Jared shrugged his shoulders. He didn't want to, but respected her influence. He knew it would only be a matter of time, before it couldn't be ignored.
"Boys, would you help put some of this away, then go get cleaned up?" Cecilia knew it wouldn't be much time, but she wanted to know what was bothering Jared.
"Sure Granma." They replied.
"Brandon, go pick some soup out of the pantry. Being that you've spent more time in there." Cecilia couldn't help herself. She snickered at the look on his face.
"Justin, be a sweetheart, and get the bread. Pick out whatever condiments you want, and put the rest back." Cecilia didn't want this to turn out to be a contest over who could help more, or less.
"Jared? Do you think you can get the pans to start warming up the soup?" Cecilia kept a watchful eye on him. She wanted him to learn how to cooperate as much as the others.
It didn't take as much effort as she thought. In no time, Cecilia had the boys doing their share of helping. She hated the thought of pre-canned soup, but in instances like this, they're a big help. Justin had picked out seven grain bread, and Brandon chose a chicken noodle with rice combo. Jared acted nervous as he turned on the stove, but with a reassuring nod from her, he acted with more confidence.
"Okay, Justin and Brandon, go wash up. There's clean towels in your bathroom upstairs." Cecilia hoped that it would take a few extra minutes for them to get there and back.
"It's okay. I mean, I'm okay. Just a little shaken up is all." Jared knew it would be time to answer her questions sooner or later.
"If you say so. Please stir the soup before it burns." Cecilia didn't want him to start opening up now. It could wait until after lunch.
"No, really, I feel fine." Jared didn't want this to be a big production, but wanted to calm her fears.
"Like I said. That's good." Cecilia never turned her attention away from the sandwiches she was making.
Jared almost spilled the soup, as he turned to face her. He couldn't tell if she was serious, or just leading him on.
"Careful honey. That's getting pretty hot." Cecilia noticed the motion out of the corner of her eye.
"Oops, sorry." Jared's chin dropped, as he turned back to his task.
"No need for any apology. I just don't want you to get hurt is all." Cecilia smiled at him as she reached for some plates.
"So, you think that Jared's in trouble?" Brandon looked up towards Justin, a few steps up.
"Nah, he needs to realize that no matter what, we're still family." Justin stopped at the top, and waited for Brandon to catch up.
"Why are you moving so slow now? Earlier you would give the energizer bunny a run for his money." Justin watched as he crept past him.
"I'm in no hurry now, we're home and safe. Besides, I think that Jared needs a minute or two to think about things." Brandon turned to see the shocked look on his brother's face.
"Since when did you become all wise and stuff?" Justin caught up to him in a couple of steps.
"I guess when you guys found me." Brandon stared into his eyes.
"When we found you…" Justin couldn't finish his sentence. It finally dawned on him.
The two made their way to the bathroom. They were in no hurry, they'd know when the time was right.
"I think the soups done. It's all bubbly and stuff." Jared looked into the hot liquid like the answers he wanted were there.
"That's good. Turn off the burner now, so it can cool down a little." Cecilia watched Jared. She knew something was bothering him, but it would be up to him to talk about it.
"Why do we heat it up, then let it get cold again before we eat it." Jared didn't turn around, instead it looked as if he was talking to the stove.
"Well, we want to get it hot to make sure its cooked, then we let it cool so it won't burn our tongues." Cecilia scooted a chair out, and sat down.
"It doesn't make sense." Jared didn't turn around.
"Why don't you come sit with me. We'll see if we can make sense of this." Cecilia watched him as he started to walk towards her.
Jared didn't need another invitation. He knew any minute spent with her, was one to be cherished. He walked around the chair she offered, and instead found his way into her lap.
"What brought this on?" Cecilia wrapped her arms around him. She knew it would only be a matter of time, before they were too big and didn't enjoy this time with her.
Jared lifted his head from her shoulder and blinked his eyes. They were moist, and he didn't want to bring on the shower of tears.
"It's okay. Take your time." Cecilia did the only thing she could. She held him and waited for him to open up.
Jared knew it would only be a minute or two before his brothers returned. In fact, his curiosity got the best of him, and he sat up.
"What's the matter?" Cecilia enjoyed the close contact of her boys. His abrupt motion caught her by surprise.
"Where are they? It doesn't take that long to wash your hands." Jared looked in the direction of their rooms. He narrowed his eyes as if it would help to see what they're up to.
"I'm not sure. But their stomachs must be rumbling by now." Cecilia released her arms from around him. She only wished that this moment would've been longer.
"Well, if it's any consolation, I feel better. Thanks Granma." Jared gave her a quick peck on the cheek.
Just like clockwork, the other two walked back into the kitchen. Brandon was leading the way.
"Is lunch ready?" Justin knew better, but wanted to make sure.
"Yes, it is. Are you hungry?" Cecilia stood up and smiled at Jared. She knew this wasn't over, not yet.
"I's starving Granma." Brandon gave her his best lost puppy look.
"Help get everything ready then, and we'll eat." Cecilia watched as the three boys worked in unison. She never knew they could work so well together.
"Let's sit down and eat now. There will be plenty of time later to tell me what happened." Cecilia watched as all three boys faces changed. For some reason, they were in tune with each other, and that generally wasn't a good sign.
Cecilia's eyes grew wide as the faces on the boys went blank. She could only guess what might happen next.
Sean stepped out of the elevator and ran into Dale. Marty was just able to stop himself from running into the pair.
"Nice running into you, Sean. It's what I was hoping for." Dale caught his balance, and helped steady Sean.
"Literally you mean, or figuratively?" Sean stood up and straightened his suit.
"There's this matter of the board. I know what you need. But we can't talk here." Dale looked both up and down the hallway.
Marty knew Dale. He had worked for him for many years, and if it meant no eaves dropping, it had to be serious.
"Shall we use the office? Or would that be safe enough?" Sean looked Dale in the eyes, and could see the seriousness of what he wanted to talk about.
"You know what to do." Dale looked at Marty, and nodded his head.
Marty knew what that meant. He took the lead, and led the group down the hall to Sean's office. He only glanced at the secretary and went straight for the closed doors.
He paused for a moment, and then crept inside.
Dale grabbed Sean's arm, to make sure Marty had enough time to do what he needed to do. He had to do this on a couple of occasions, but wanted to make sure it was safe.
Sean didn't know what they had planned, but trusted Dale. This was something that he could sense would not be the first time this precaution would have to be taken.
"Are there any new messages for me?" Sean tried to act like this was a normal thing happening, so he tried small talk with the secretary.
"No sir." The middle aged woman looked up from her screen, and looked at both Dale and Sean.
"It's no use Sean. We regularly rotate the secretaries around on the executive floor. We don't want someone who can take trade secrets, or notice schedules or anything that can be used against us. We made the decision when someone thought they were being stalked. So if you try to remember who was here last, it won't do you any good." Dale watched as Sean did a double take on the woman behind the desk.
"With all the new faces and names, I guess I hadn't noticed before." Sean looked back towards the big double doors that Marty disappeared into.
"We try to keep the best around, but we need honest people. Maybe with your … specific talents, you can help yourself with that." Dale had a sly grin plastered on his face.
"Maybe some other time, I think this is more important than who answers my phone for me." Sean straightened himself up when Marty opened the door.
"Yes, it is. But it's something you should do for your own piece of mind." Dale stood back to let Sean lead the way.
"I would love to sit and pick your brain some more, but let's get this done. I have an important meeting to attend." Sean went back into his business mood.
"Please hold all calls. And mention to no one that he is here. Understood?" Dale gave her a stern look. He'd seen too many people in that chair to even care, and he wasn't about to now.
The secretary only gave him a brief look. She knew her job depended on secrecy. She was paid on performance, and not on knowing what went on. She could only guess as to what the three were up to.
"Sean, I have an idea." Dale started to speak before he was interrupted.
"What was it that Marty did in here?" Sean walked around the room, and nothing seemed out of place.
"The usual safety protocols. He came in and did a bug sweep." Dale kept his eyes on Sean. He knew that Sean would always feel safe, thanks to the measures he'd put into place.
"Why? Does that sort of thing happen frequently?" Sean stopped in his tracks, and looked towards a wall.
"You'd be amazed at just how much. You have to remember, the position you're in now, is full of responsibility." Dale kept his mouth shut as Sean walked over to the wall.
"You don't need to prove anything to me Sean." Marty cleared his throat as Sean put his hand on the wall.
"You keep the sweeping devices in here?" Sean let his fingers run across the wall. He could sense that Marty had been there.
"We can't fool you. Which is why I need to talk, and now." Dale had the authority back into his voice that demanded your attention.
"And just what is it, that would require this 'secret' meeting? What could you say that would help me walk down that hall and set those … individuals in their places?" Sean squared his shoulders and walked right up to Dale.
"Just the future of this company. And how you are going to save it." Dale knew he had to back down from Sean now.
"Okay, spill it." Sean let his guard relax somewhat, but kept his eye on both Dale and Marty.
"I had the foresight, to …" Dale began his story of how he was able to stay in power for so long.
"Can we eat now, Granma?" Brandon looked from his brothers back to Cecilia.
"Yeah, can we eat now?" Justin wasn't going to wait, he was already starting to sit down.
Jared could only smile, as he looked at his brothers.
"What was that? What happened?" Cecilia stepped away from the table as the boys got ready to eat.
"What was what?" Justin didn't bother to make eye contact, as he began to help himself.
"That… thing you guys just did. Don't tell me you have no idea of what I'm talking about." Cecilia knew she had to be cautious.
"It's okay Granma. We would never hurt you." Brandon let his brothers get their servings first.
"Are you sure?" Cecilia looked at each of their faces. She should know better than to doubt them, but she still wanted to make sure.
Jared stopped what he was doing, and walked around the table. He stopped in his tracks when Cecilia began to lose her color.
"It's ok, really. We just can't tell you what happened." Jared gave her a pouty look. They were just getting along so well a few minutes ago.
"Just give her time to adjust." Justin stopped his clamoring for food to give his brother some advice.
'It really is okay Granma.' Amanda materialized next to Cecilia.
"You have got to stop doing that without warning a person first." Cecilia's nerves were getting stretched to the point of no return.
'Incoming.' Jacob's voice could be heard, before he began snickering.
'Stop fooling around. We have things to do.' Amanda scolded a spot in the room on the other side of Cecilia.
'Hey, she said warn her…' Jacob was covering his mouth with his hand, as he tried to suppress his giggles.
"What are you two doing back so soon?" Cecilia knew she was fighting a losing battle. She was outnumbered, and now with the other two present, it was just easier to agree and figure it out later.
'You don't miss us?' Amanda looked away, her voice full of sadness.
'Now who's playing around.' Jacob walked over and poked his sister in the arm.
"Okay, will someone please tell me what's going on?" Cecilia could see what they were trying to do.
"We tried to tell you. But you didn't listen." Brandon shrugged his shoulders. He knew they did tell her.
"How? Tell me what?" Cecilia now had two more faces to try to figure the truth out of.
"Sorry Granma. What he's trying to say, is that we can't tell you, but it's something that will make a difference in …" Justin felt a chill run up his spine. It was so cold that he lost his ability to speak as he crossed his arms and began rubbing them in an attempt to warm up.
'You should know better. Let that be a lesson to you.' Jacob spun on his heels to face him.
"So, let me get this straight." Cecilia put her hands on her hips as she tried to figure out what happened.
'Just accept things. It's easier. We can't give you the answers you seek, but will tell you that it will help.' Amanda looked at her brother and he nodded his head.
'Please?' Jacob gave her a pleading look.
"Okay, you guys win… this time." Cecilia knew she couldn't say no to that look.
With her agreement, the two corporally challenged children took their leave. The way they can pop in and disappear still gave Cecilia the goose bumps.
"Goody, we get to eat now." While his brothers were preoccupied, Brandon decided to help himself. The soup pan was just out of his reach though.
"Psst." Justin tried to get Brandon's attention before Cecilia noticed.
"Let me help you bro." Jared turned around with such speed, Cecilia knew something was up.
"I've seen it before. There's nothing you guys can't get past these eyes." Cecilia used a tone that let the boys know it was okay.
"Seen what?" Brandon let Justin help with the hot liquid.
"I've seen you guys do things, that would normally be considered impossible. But when you start reaching things that a little boy can't reach, especially from a wheel chair…" Cecilia knew that she'd caught them off guard.
"That's what he has brothers for." Jared looked at her in disbelief. The look on his face let her know she'd struck a nerve with them.
"It's okay. Really." Cecilia used caution as she took her steps to the table.
All three boys sat down and looked at her. They had no idea of how much she knew, but if she was watching that close, they knew she knew more than she let on.
"What's… ok?" Brandon tried to shrink in his chair. He knew his brothers warned him, but they did try to keep his secret.
"I know you boys, and I mean all three of you, are special. Your gifts are unique, and you need to master them so that when you do need them, they will be like tying your shoe. So, I think that if you have to try to keep it secret, you need to try a little harder." Cecilia was risking her own well being confronting such powerful youths with their deception. She knew she had to tread lightly.
"It's alright now. At least you don't have to hide it anymore." Justin patted Brandon on the back, trying to ease the tension that was building up in him.
"Yeah, it's about time too. I was getting tired of trying to find you every time that I felt that energy spike." Jared tried to help, and got up from his chair to give Brandon a hug.
"It really is alright, Brandon. There is nothing to be ashamed or scared of." Cecilia knew his brothers could only do so much, but her comforting words might be enough to help tilt his mood back. She could feel the surge of electricity even from the opposite side of the table.
"Keep it under control. That's it. Let it go… slowly now." Justin scooted his chair closer to Brandon, so he could help absorb some of the energy that emanated from him.
"Brandon, you need to release it. Don't let it build up so high." Jared tightened his grip on him as he tried to be an energy sponge.
"Listen to your brothers. They are trying to help you. Don't be afraid." Cecilia had never seen Brandon act like this before. She knew what kind of devastation the energy building up could cause.
With Jared hugging him, and Justin being as close to him without sitting on him, Brandon opened his eyes. The electrical storm could be seen in his pupils as a tear escaped out of the corner of his eye.
"I.. I'm… sorry." Brandon closed his eyes and with a sudden twitch, made his brothers fly backwards.
"Brandon? Brandon? Are you alright?" Cecilia didn't know if she should approach him or not. The twins were shaking the cobwebs out, from opposite ends of the kitchen.
"Justin? Jared" Cecilia couldn't move, but she wanted to make sure they were all okay.
"Wow! That was incredible!" Justin was first to his feet. He dusted his pants off, and then walked over to make sure Jared was alright.
"That was one hell of a jolt." Jared sat upright and looked across the kitchen. He let Justin help him to his feet, and together they walked back to the table.
"I'm really sorry guys." Brandon watched his brothers as they came back and sat down.
"Granma?" Brandon was the first to acknowledge her. She stood with her mouth open as she stared at them.
"I thought you knew at least that much." Justin knew it was his turn to try and hide in his chair.
"No… I had no idea it was like that." Cecilia had to sit down before she fell. With some extreme reluctance, she pulled a chair out from the table. She kept an eagle eye on the boys though.
"Can we eat now?" Brandon knew he was tired of being the center of attention. His growling stomach let everyone know he was serious about being hungry.
"You may." Cecilia was in shock. Had Brandon been alone with her when this went off like it did, she didn't want to know the end result. The twins had absorbed as much as they could, and still, they went flying.
"Has this happened before?" Cecilia asked no one in particular. If today was her lucky day like it appeared to be, one of them would give her an honest answer.
"Not quite." Justin couldn't find the strength needed to look her in the eye.
"That was probably, the most he let go at once." Jared didn't want to hide it anymore.
"I said I was sorry." Brandon crossed his arms and stuck out his lower lip in a pout.
"So some of that rough housing, I heard, was one of these…" Cecilia finally added it up.
"Usually if he just moves stuff or something, it weakens it." Justin put the last bite of his sandwich in his mouth as he glanced at her.
"He's been good today, and not using it. So I think it just grew too much." Jared didn't bother to look up, but gave his brothers a sideways glance.
"I've been trying to control it… honest." Brandon looked away from the table.
"I'm sure you have been, sweetie. But it appears that you need more guidance than what the three of you have been doing." Cecilia needed for her voice to stay steady, and comforting.
"We haven't broken anything, and with little more than a few tussles, we've been doing ok." Justin looked at her, and knew he was right.
"What do you think Jared?" Cecilia knew it was going to have to be a diplomatic decision.
"I think if Dad were here, he would know what to do." Jared hung his head, he didn't want to go against his brothers, but didn't want to hide it from Sean either.
"Like duh? You don't think he already knows?" Brandon couldn't believe his ears. Jared wouldn't stand up for them.
"I agree with Jared this time. If anyone would know what to do, it would be your dad. But he's busy with work right now. Is there anything we can agree on then, that would keep this hidden from the rest of the world, right now?" Cecilia danced around the subject with too much ease.
"So, we keep this hidden, and only talk to Dad about this? So it'll be like a big blue elephant in the room, that no one sees?" Justin wanted to make sure he understood.
"In a way, yes. But you guys really need to sit down and talk with Sean when he gets home. Okay?" Cecilia knew the answer would upset the two that had voted the other way.
"But what do we do, if something happens in the meantime?" Jared rubbed his shoulder where he'd landed earlier.
"I guess, we hope for the best, and try not to let it happen again." Cecilia could only guess what might happen. If the twins weren't there to catch the brunt of the blast, the kitchen would be in shambles right now.
"Hehe, I got you guys good that time." Brandon couldn't help but laugh. He knew his special ability was growing too fast for him, but his brothers were awesome at bleeding most of the energy off.
"And then, I will have to talk with your dad about why there can't be another person in the house. At least, until you get this under control." Cecilia now had the leverage she needed to fend off Sean and his insistence about finding her a helper.
"That's no fair." Justin had wanted her to have more time for them. His mind started working overtime.
"Yeah Granma. You need to get some time off, to enjoy life and us. Not to mention… maybe finding someone to make you happy too." Brandon clasped his hands and kept them in his lap.
"Those things, might be nice, but can you imagine what would happen if your secret was out?" Cecilia went straight to the point. She'd often thought about being able to take vacations, and maybe try to find a cure for her loneliness.
"Then it's settled. Brandon you need to practice even more." Jared shrugged his shoulders as he began to clean up his dishes.
"Not until your father gets home." Cecilia knew that someone could get hurt by their experimenting.
"It's no big deal. Whatever he builds up, we can absorb it or redirect it." Justin stood up and started clearing his place.
"As long as you guys can take it, I can dish it out." Brandon kept the grin on his face that seemed to be plastered there.
"I hope you guys are kidding." Cecilia couldn't tell if they were joking or not.
The three boys only stood up from their seats and turned to face the sink. Brandon's grin grew as he thought about what he was trying to do. As if they were alive, the dishes began to float to the sink. All the bowls, plates and silverware stayed together as they glided through the air.
Cecilia closed her eyes in disbelief and covered her ears. The last thing she wanted to do was hear the crash of dishes hitting the floor. Curiosity got the best of her, and she opened one eye. What she saw, was even more unbelievable.
"Jared, you're letting them slip." Justin whispered as he concentrated on his share of the floating porcelain.
Cecilia could tell whatever was making the dishes float, was coming from all three boys. The idea was coming to her that whatever energy the twins absorbed, they too had to burn it off before it got to critical mass.
Brandon's giggling made them lose their attention and they almost let them hit the floor before recovering.
Cecilia watched as every last plate and bowl, spoon and fork, cup and glass, settled in the sink. She was astonished that the idea that all three could do what she only guessed was one of them.
"I told you guys, just let it flow, and help direct where you want it to go." Brandon watched his brothers break into a sweat doing the little task that he felt he'd already mastered.
"Granma?" Brandon offered his hands out for her setting.
"No thanks. I can put them in by myself." Cecilia was numb with the new data that was thrust upon her.
"Do you want us to do the dishes?" Justin knew she was in shock, but he really couldn't do much for her except give her the space and time she needed to absorb everything.
"No… you guys can go play or … whatever." Cecilia braced herself on the table. Her mind was reeling in thoughts.
'They do know what they're doing. Trust them.' Amanda's voice rang in her ears.
"How can you be so sure, they're so young to have that much power." Cecilia whispered to the table.
'And just who do you think has been helping them?' Jacob's voice replaced that of his sister, and was only heard.
"I pray that you're right." Cecilia closed her eyes as she thought about how simple life used to be.
"Please tell the board that I'm on my way." Sean announced to his secretary as he left his office.
He walked with a new bounce in his step, a man on a mission. And he had the ability, by legal means to help him with his discovery.
He approached the doors and could already hear the rustling of papers in the room. Apparently some had not left after him.
"Ladies, and gentlemen. There has been something brought to my attention. Besides what I've discovered there has been an issue of abuse of power in this company." Sean walked straight into the room.
"And, with the bylaws on my side, I will get to the bottom of this." Sean began to walk around the individuals that had stayed.
"While we wait for the few that have left, let me reintroduce myself." Sean stood at the head of table and placed his hands on the smooth surface.
